Caruso's end-of-life care
Little Caruso... and again, I have tears in my eyes and a smile on my lips.
Mirjam & Caruso had already gone a long way. Caruso had been fasting for many days and was losing substance, in the truest sense of the word. He had a malignant kidney tumor in its final stages. Mirjam was concerned with very general questions such as "what else can I do for him", "should I just give him water or chicken broth", "what good is DMSO"?
After the anamnesis interview, Mirjam received a list of tips, instructions and links from me on the subject of end-of-life care (which is constantly growing).
The attending vet was informed and so it was off to the next weekend. But Caruso didn't make it easy for himself and Mirjam in particular. So much, that she took Caruso to a nearby veterinary clinic on Sundays "to sleep".
THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG - THERE IS ONLY YOUR INDIVIDUAL PATH! AND BOTH OF YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW IT.
End-of-life care in general
Each and every one of us knows that this day will come.
Fortunately, we cannot predict how and when our companions will pass away.
And fortunately, when the pain and hardship become too much, there is the option of putting an end to it all.
However, I speak from my own experience when you ask yourself (for many years) whether it was too early, or perhaps shouldn't have been - no matter how great the suffering may have been at the time.
We have forgotten to accept death for what it is - a part of life. With all the pain associated with it.
We feed "organic", use "pure natural products" for our toys and vaccinate "selectively",
...there is also a "natural" way out of this life!
I don't want to sugarcoat anything here - dying rarely has anything to do with "falling asleep"!
NO MATTER HOW FAR YOU WILL GO THE LAST WAY TOGETHER, WITH OR WITHOUT "INJECTION"
THE TOP MISSION IS PAIN-FREENESS - and that ALWAYS belongs in the hands of an experienced vet!
Close consultation between all therapists is more than desirable in these cases.
IN ADDITION, for the last weeks, days and then hours, there are many things that make the journey easier for everyone involved, but let's say more bearable.
It is important to have a contact person to guide you through this situation - dying is a process.
You are always confronted with questions and it helps to be able to ask them and have them answered.
In addition, all individual wishes, no matter how small, are elevated to a maxim
- that of the dying animal, as well as that of the owner.
